GUNFLINT LODGE and GUNFLINT NORTHWOODS OUTFITTERS

Employment Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in joining our staff. Between the two businesses we employ approximately 55 employees during the summer and 29 employees during the winter. Employees range in age from 18 to approximately 70 and come from all over the US and Europe. Take a moment to read the following. It will give you an idea of what Gunflint is like and our expectations of prospective employees.

The lodge and canoe outfitters are located 45 miles up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais Minnesota. Thus 45 miles from the nearest town! We are surrounded by over 1 million acres of wilderness in the Superior National Forest. Guests come from all over the country to relax, fish, swim, canoe, and explore in the Northwoods atmosphere. The lodge summer season runs from late April to November 1. The winter season is from November 23 to April 1. During the off seasons we work on spring cleaning and renovation projects. The outfitting business is in operation from approximately May 1 to October 30.

Over the years our guests have come to expect a friendly and helpful staff. They come to have a relaxed vacation and we’re dependent on our staff to see that they have the best time possible. Often this means a little extra work, or time, to help a guest but we feel it’s worth it and you should too! In order to maintain the level of our guest’s expectations we’ve established certain standards that we expect you to abide by. All employees must appear neat and well groomed. We provide uniform shirts for the staff. A more detailed description of uniform and grooming requirements will be provided if you are hired.

Perhaps the two most important qualities we look for in our employees are a cheerful attitude and the willingness to go the extra mile. Resort and outfitting work means long, hard, and sometimes irregular hours. It is certainly not a paid vacation. The schedules are set for 45 hours per week. Although you may be hired for a specific position there are times when you may be called upon to fulfill other job duties. In a resort atmosphere we all pitch in where ever necessary to get the job done, with that in mind we are looking for applicants who are extremely flexible and like a variety of work.

Many of the positions at the Lodge also receive a bonus for completed contracts. (GNO and Wait/Housekeeping positions do not receive bonuses.) Employees become eligible for the bonus program by completing their contract. Recreational equipment is available for use at a minimal charge. However, all of our facilities are for guest’s use first.

Bunkhouse style accommodations are available, if desired, here on the grounds. This is for a bunk room (shared with from 1-5 other people) including your utilities and cleaning supplies, toilet paper and Kleenex. Showers are down the hall. You are responsible for your own meals. There are shared cooking facilities for staff use. Smoking is not permitted in staff housing or work areas!! The use of drugs and /or liquor are not permitted. There is a public Laundromat at the campground next door. We do not receive any TV or radio reception. You may bring your own TV/VCR or CD player if you like. We have some movies available for staff use. (We also have a few employee trailer sites with full hookups - please inquire.)

We hope that you’ll join us in the Northwoods for a summer…or two. If you have any questions regarding the job opportunities feel free to contact us at (218)388-2294, or (800)328-3325. You may mail your application to Human Resources Gunflint Lodge, 143 S. Gunflint Lake, Grand Marais MN 55604, or you may fax it to us at (218)388-9429. Our e-mail address is gunflint@gunflint.com
